The new Larvotto: a seaside resort in Monaco

20 March 2023 - 2 min

After two years of construction work, the new Larvotto promenade was inaugurated in July 2021. It now offers an ideal seaside setting for residents and tourists. Here is a brief look at this vast development project.

A modern and pleasing promenade to walk along

Inaugurated in July of 2021, the "New Larvotto" is a development project for Monaco's north-eastern coast. With an initial budget estimated between 50 and 80 million euros and which has since been increased to 110 million, this vast urban project enabled the redesign of the seaside and enhanced the attractiveness of an area with high tourist potential. No less than 2,000 m² of additional space was added to the existing 2,850 m².

After two years of construction, the Larvotto promenade now offers a dream scenery in which to wander, stroll, do some shopping and sunbathe on the terrace or take a dip and dry off in the sun on the new sandy beach.

A modern, light and invigorating architecture

The landscaping project was entrusted to a duo of architects. The French landscape architect Michel Desvigne on the one hand, and the Italian Renzo Piano - famous for the Pompidou Centre (Paris), The Shard (London), the New York Times Building or, more recently, the new San Giorgio viaduct in Genoa, the city from which he comes on the other hand.

Along the lower boardwalk that ends the beach, about 20 establishments have set up business in completely remodeled premises. These include restaurants, an ice cream shop, a gym, a first aid station and a diving school.

In addition, the four private beaches have been renovated and are now open all year round.

The promenade is easy to walk along, but can also be explored by bicycle thanks to the construction of a bicycle trail alongside the promenade.

Eventually, this path will be covered with pergolas on which solar panels will be installed. In addition, 380 trees endemic to the Mediterranean climate will be planted (palm trees, umbrella pines, eucalyptus, etc.).

A neighborhood conquered by the sea

Thanks to its many beachside assets and its quality of life, Larvotto is one of the most popular residential areas in Monaco. It is also the most populated of the Principality.

Created in 1966 by an order of Prince Rainier III, it has not stopped expanding on the Mediterranean. One third of its current surface area is the result of the construction of maritime docks.

In addition, the renovation of the Larvotto has made it possible to protect the beach better from the waves. The solution that was chosen is a breakwater placed between the two seawalls at the entrance to the beach.

A way to safeguard the natural habitat of the Posidonia meadow. This marine ecosystem, emblematic of the Mediterranean, is essential to protect the coastline against erosion. It also hosts many forms of underwater life.

Today, the district is home to several important places in Monaco. This is the case of the Grimaldi Forum, a congress center inaugurated in 2000 with a capacity of 3000 people. We can also mention the magnificent Japanese Garden imagined by the landscape designer Yasuo Beppu and opened in 1994.
